ONF manages some 370 000ha of biological and natural reserves in France. These reserves are one of the essential elements of a healthy and diverse natural environment. Moreover, some 1.26 million ha of public forest in France are classed under the Natura 2000 programme of which ONF is the chief French operator. ONF is also a central player in the implementation and management of National Parks in the tropics (notably in French Guyana and Reunion Island).
ONF has been involved in the establishment, management and control of protected areas since its creation, and today possesses a strong in-house experience and know-how in biodiversity and protected area management, and participatory and integrated approaches.
Projects have been carried out in numerous countries throughout the world (Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Paraguay, Cuba, Morocco, Lebanon, Armenia, Georgia, Gabon....) permitting ONFI to develop a network of experts and to understand and tackle the different problems facing this domain:
Management planning, objective stating documents
Cartography, indicators and monitoring tools
Scientific training, management techniques
Institutional support (regulatory aspects required for project implementation and management)
Project elaboration and seeking of funding
